New Jersey governor extends public health emergency

For a 10th time Gov. Phil Murphy has extended New Jersey’s public-health emergency, this time through late January. The order expires after 30 days if it is not extended. The announcement came as New Jersey’s second-wave surge has shown some signs of leveling off. “Given where we are currently we must remain in a proper footing where [state officials] can have the authority to continue responding to the challenges posed by the pandemic,” the governor said. The order gives Murphy the power to keep taking executive action to fight COVID-19’s spread. It does not reverse any of the steps the governor already has taken to reopen the state, or institute any new restrictions, but it does keep the state’s current restrictions in place – such as 50 percent capacity at stores and 25 percent capacity for indoor dining, as well as mandates to wear masks in public. In addition, Murphy ordered bars and restaurants to halt indoor dining from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.; however, takeout and outdoor dining may continue past 10 p.m., adding that no bar-side seating is allowed. Another change allows restaurants to seat tables closer than six feet apart if they erect a barrier. He also said that all indoor interstate athletic events will be prohibited.
Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino reopens
Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack has reopened at 50 percent capacity after temporarily closing on order of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf. A temporary no-smoking policy remains in effect. In addition, indoor dining will be allowed at 50 percent capacity. Customers only can drink alcoholic beverages at a bar or a restaurant if it is part of a meal, and restaurants have to stop serving alcohol by 11 p.m.

Trump Plaza fundraiser canceled
Bidders soon could compete for a front-row seat to watch the demolition of Trump Plaza. An auction for the right to press the button to blow up the building fell through due to opposition from the owner, Icahn Enterprises. Joe Bodnar, owner of Bodnar‘s Auction, which ran the original auction, said he expects to hold another auction for seats at a “viewing party” to watch the tower come down at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17. The initial auction to press the demolition button topped out with a high bid of $175,000 and was to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City. Carl Icahn’s foundation plans to donate that same amount of money directly to the club. Bodnar said the plan for the new auction is to offer 10 pairs of seats. While bids will start at $10 each, Bodnar estimates each pair could fetch $3,000 to $5,000. Live! Philly to match tier status Visit the Live! Rewards Desk at Live! Bally’s completes Bally’s purchase

Bally’s Corp. officially completed its $25 million purchase of Bally’s Atlantic City on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The company acquired the 1,251-room hotel-casino from Caesars Entertainment Inc. and VICI Properties, with Caesars collecting 25 percent of the proceeds, and the real estate investment trust earning 75 percent. In October, the then-Twin River Worldwide Holdings Inc. paid Caesars $20 million for control of the Bally’s name, brand and intellectual property. The corporate name change took effect on Nov. 9. Eventually, the company will operate 14 casinos in 10 states, with many of the casinos rebranded as Bally’s properties.

Bally’s Corp. and FanDuel Group have opened a temporary FanDuel Sportsbook at Bally’s. The sportsbook, located on the main casino floor at the base of the escalators leading up to the sixth floor dining level, features six live odds boards, 10 self-service betting kiosks, and three betting windows with attendants available to assist customers with the sports betting process. It allows bets on all major U.S. sports, including professional baseball, soccer, football, basketball, golf, boxing, motorsports racing, and more. Design and construction are currently underway on the permanent FanDuel Sportsbook location, which Bally’s expects to open in the spring. The facility will span 4,100 sq. ft. and consist of 34 self-service betting kiosks, and five attended live wagering windows. It also will feature a luxury 80-seat lounge with 30 reclining club chairs, oversized LED video walls, and a food and beverage menu including self-service craft beer. The sportsbook is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for self-service kiosks. Attendants are available at live wagering stations from noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Caesars Rewards cardholders still can use their Reward Credits and Celebration Dinners, and take advantage of free play and gift offers, as well as other benefits. According to a Bally’s Corp. spokesperson: “Bally’s Atlantic City will continue to be a part of Caesars Rewards for the foreseeable future and Bally’s customers will continue to earn and redeem Reward Credits and tier credits. At this time, we do not have an official timeline to share, but expect the property’s transition out of Caesars Rewards to be completed sometime in Q1 of 2021. More information on the transition will be communicated to Bally’s customers over the coming months.” The only restrictions are that you no longer can sign charges from purchases at Bally’s, e.g., dinner at Guy Fieri’s Chophouse, to your room if you’re staying at Caesars Atlantic City or Harrah’s Resort. Conversely, if you’re staying at Bally’s, you cannot sign charges from Caesars or Harrah’s. In addition, keep in mind that the Wild Wild West Casino is now part of Caesars, not Bally’s. Consequently, if you download free play at a Promotional Kiosk at Bally’s, you can play it only at Bally’s, not the Wild Wild West. Put yourself in Jeopardy!

The base game of this large-format machine is Wheel of Fortune’s Triple Double Diamond. Players are eligible for a Jeopardy! bonus with a 6-, 10- or 20-credit bet. Wagering 10 credits gives players four more paylines and increases their Daily Double chances in the bonus. Wagering 20 credits gives players even more Daily Doubles, and increases their chances at a progressive jackpot. The bonus is triggered with three “Bonus” symbols on a paid payline. Plus, if you’re at Borgata from 9 p.m. to midnight on Fridays, Jan. 22 and 29, you’ll earn 10X Slot Dollars on any rated play. New year, new slots

Cruise news you can use

CDC issues new warning about cruise ship travel U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised its warning for cruise ship travel to “Level 4: Very High Level of Covid-19” Nov. 22. “The CDC recommends that all people avoid travel on cruise ships, including river cruises, worldwide, because the risk of COVID-19 on cruise ships is very high,” the warning states. Although not a total ban on cruising, the Level 4 warning states:
  • Cruise passengers are at increased risk of person-to-person spread of infectious diseases, including COVID-19, and outbreaks of COVID-19 have been reported on cruise ships.
  • Passengers who decide to go on a cruise should get tested 3 to 5 days after their trip AND stay home for seven days after travel. Even if they test negative, stay home for the full seven days.
  • If they don't get tested, it’s safest to stay home for 14 days after travel.
The CDC’s warning is for U.S. citizens only; in the United Kingdom the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office has a warning against ocean cruising only. Meanwhile, cruise lines continue to cancel further and further out into next year in an attempt to put in place the 74 measures demanded by the CDC for a safe return to cruising from U.S. ports. It looks unlikely that cruising will restart from the states in earnest anytime soon. Cruise lines cancel most cruises through March
Norwegian Cruise Line has canceled all voyages with embarkation dates through Sunday, Feb. 28, as well as all voyages onboard Norwegian Bliss, Breakaway, Epic, Gem, Getaway, Jade, Jewel, Pearl, Sky, Sun and Pride of America with embarkation dates through Wednesday, March 31. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruise Line are extending their global suspension through Feb. 28.
Exceptions to this include Royal Caribbean Singapore sailings onboard Quantum of the Seas, and Spectrum of the Seas’ China departures between Sunday, Jan. 24 and Feb. 28.
In addition, the remainder of the Royal Caribbean Australia/New Zealand season has been canceled through April.
Cruise lines cancel more cruises Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises are extending their global suspension through Friday, April 30. Celebrity also will be including the Saturday, May 1, transatlantic cruise on Celebrity Apex in this round of cancellations. as well as the May through October Europe and transatlantic cruises on Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Constellation. For more information, click here. ‘Cruise to nowhere’ returns after passenger tests positive Having completed its first short journey since March only days earlier, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas made it to day-three of its latest four-day sailing following a positive test from an 83-year-old Singaporean man. The vessel arrived back in Singapore on Wednesday, Dec. 9, with the man, as well as all passengers and crew who came into close contact with him, immediately placed into isolation. There were 1,680 guests and 1,148 crew members on the sailing. Royal Caribbean was the second cruise ship operator to launch “cruise to nowhere” sailings out of Singapore this month after Genting Cruise Lines debuted the initiative in early November. Both companies had outlined a raft of COVID-19 safety measures including a 50 percent capacity limit, online only check-ins, all baggage being required to undergo a disinfection process, and all passengers having to submit a negative COVID-19 test acquired prior to arrival.
CDC lifts ‘No-Sail’ order
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has lifted its “No-Sail” Order which has restricted all cruise travel to and from the United States. The order originally was issued by the CDC March 14 and extended twice. The filing is called a “framework for conditional sailing” and outlines the testing process that the cruise lines must go through to resume operations safely. The first phase calls for testing and safeguards for crew members, followed by “simulated voyages” to make sure that cruise lines can mitigate the risk of COVID-19. After that, the agency will allow a “phased return” to passenger voyages. “This framework provides a pathway to resume safe and responsible sailing. It will mitigate the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks on ships and prevent passengers and crew from seeding outbreaks at ports and in the communities where they live,” CDC Director Robert R. Redfield said. The CDC’s new guidance will be in effect for cruises to and from U.S. ports of call until Monday, Nov. 1, 2021.
